This Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the National Park System.  It is an important wetland area and habitat for birds, fish, and invertebrates.

Today I visited with a group of student teachers and students from a local middle school in Brooklyn, New York. They are studying wetlands.

We saw osprey, gulls, Canada geese, and other migratory birds. We also got to see two diamondback terrapins.  It is their breeding season and they are coming up on shore to lay their eggs.

Washington Square Park is a very popular public park used by the New York University community and the residents of the area.  It is also home to red-tailed hawks who have taken up residence in the nearby NYU buildings and use the park as feeding ground for their meals.
