While it sounds like something out of a horror film, one of Madrid's less visited museums offers an interesting look at life in the early 20th century. What was once the Chamberí metro stop has now been converted into a free museum that transports (pun intended) visitors to how Madrid looked one hundred years ago. Dimly lit and lined with eery signs, the station looks more like the white-washed walls of an insane asylum, rather than part of an efficent subway system. While no passengers can get on and off at this platform, trains still pass through on their way to other stations along line 1. I couldn't find a reason why it was shut down decades ago, but perhaps that adds to the mystery of it.
